It’s Not Getting to the Top That Kills You—It’s Coming Down

Coming Down from the Summit

Reaching the summit is worth celebrating—but it is not permission to stop paying attention.

After the breakthrough may come criticism. Answer it without surrendering to offense.

After the victory may come exhaustion. Admit that you are weary, receive God’s strength, and continue the pursuit.

Along the way, you will meet others who are barely moving. Bring them the soup. Give them what you can to help them continue.

And when the temptation comes to settle for an almost-complete victory, remember: the task is not finished simply because the hardest or most visible battle has been won.

Reaching the summit feels like the end of the journey. The struggle is over, the goal has been achieved, and surely the hardest part is now behind us.

But mountain climbers know better.

Pastor shared that many Mount Everest deaths occur during the descent, after climbers have reached the summit. They have survived the bitter cold, thin air, and exhausting climb. They have stood at the top of the world—but they still have to get home.

That is the danger of the summit: it feels like the finish line when the journey is not yet finished.

The same can be true spiritually. We prepare ourselves for the battle, but not always for what follows it. We pray for the breakthrough, celebrate the victory, and then lower our guard. That is often when offense, criticism, exhaustion, or unfinished business threatens what God has accomplished. Gideon discovered this immediately after one of Israel’s greatest victories.

Next week: Gideon discovers that winning the battle does not end the opposition.
