The Olive Branch

The Apostle Paul uses the image of an olive tree in Romans 11 to explain the relationship between Gentile Christians and Israel.

The olive tree represents the people and covenant purposes of God, rooted in the promises made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Israel is pictured as the tree’s natural branches. Some of those branches were broken off because of unbelief, while Gentile believers—described as branches from a wild olive tree—were grafted in through faith in Jesus Christ.

“And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree.”
—Romans 11:17, KJV

Paul’s point is not that Gentile believers replaced Israel. Rather, they were graciously brought into blessings that originated within God’s covenant dealings with Israel. Christians do not support the root; the root supports them.

For this reason, Paul warns Gentile believers against pride:

“Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.”
—Romans 11:18, KJV

The grafting teaches several important truths:

  • Salvation comes through Israel’s Messiah, Jesus Christ.
  • Gentile believers share in the spiritual blessings flowing from God’s promises.
  • Their place in the tree is based on faith, not ethnic descent or personal merit.
  • Israel’s unbelief does not mean that God has abandoned Israel.
  • The natural branches can be grafted in again when they turn to God in faith.

Paul concludes that Israel’s present condition is neither complete nor permanent. A partial hardening has occurred “until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in” (Romans 11:25). God’s gifts and calling concerning Israel remain irrevocable.

The olive-tree illustration therefore presents the Church and Israel as connected but not simply interchangeable. Gentile Christians have been welcomed into God’s redemptive story; they have not taken possession of the tree or erased the identity of its natural branches. They stand by grace, nourished by promises whose roots reach back to the patriarchs.

"And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and [a]fatness of the olive tree"
