It’s Not Getting to the Top That Kills You—It’s Coming Down – Part 5

Ninety Percent Is Not Finished

Gideon refused to stop with most of the enemy defeated. He pursued the remaining army, captured Zebah and Zalmunna, and completed the assignment God had placed before him. Only then did the land experience peace for forty years.

An incomplete victory can leave behind the very thing that later rises again.

The book of Judges repeatedly records Israel’s failure to remove what God had commanded them to confront. The people accepted partial obedience, tolerated remaining strongholds, and eventually lived under the influence of what they had refused to finish.

We can do something similar. God gives us victory over a destructive pattern, an unhealthy relationship, an old resentment, or a persistent temptation. We make progress and begin to feel free—but then stop pursuing at ninety percent.

The remaining ten percent may appear harmless. Yet what we tolerate can eventually regain strength.

Gideon’s example calls us to finish the pursuit. The task was not complete when he won the spectacular battle. It was complete when the final threat had been confronted.

Jesus demonstrated perfect perseverance. Despite rejection, suffering, exhaustion, and the cross, He did not stop until He could declare:

“It is finished.”
—John 19:30

He did not say, “It is nearly finished,” or “I have done enough.” He completed the work the Father had given Him.

Hebrews tells us to consider Christ, “who endured such opposition from sinners,” so that we do not grow weary and lose heart (Hebrews 12:3). Our strength to finish does not come from pretending we are not tired. It comes from fixing our attention on the One who endured to the end.

The summit is not home.

Keep walking until the assignment is complete.
