Abraham's Offspring
The Apostle Paul writes:
“And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.” — Galatians 3:29
This means that everyone who belongs to Christ—Jew or Gentile—is brought into the spiritual family of Abraham and receives the blessings God promised through him.
God promised Abraham that through his offspring all nations would be blessed (Genesis 12:3; 22:18). Paul explains that this promise ultimately points to Jesus Christ, the promised “offspring” through whom salvation comes (Galatians 3:16). When we place our faith in Christ, we become united with Him. Consequently, what belongs to Christ is shared with those who belong to Him.
To be “Abraham’s offspring,” therefore, does not mean that Gentile Christians become ethnically Jewish. It means they become Abraham’s spiritual descendants by following the same path of faith:
“Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” — Galatians 3:6
As Abraham was declared righteous through faith, believers are justified through faith in Christ. They become part of God’s covenant family and heirs of the promised blessings—reconciliation with God, the gift of the Holy Spirit, eternal life, and participation in God’s coming kingdom.
This verse also explains Paul’s statement immediately before it:
“There is neither Jew nor Greek… for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” — Galatians 3:28
Ethnic, social, and human distinctions do not determine anyone’s standing before God. Both Jewish and Gentile believers receive salvation through the same Messiah.
Importantly, Paul is not necessarily saying that the Church has erased or replaced Israel. His fuller explanation in Romans 11 is that Gentile believers have been grafted into the cultivated olive tree whose roots lie in God’s covenant promises to the patriarchs. Gentile Christians do not create a new tree or replace its Jewish roots; they are graciously included in blessings that originated with Abraham and reached the nations through Israel’s Messiah.
In simple terms:
If you belong to Christ, Abraham’s God has become your God, Abraham’s faith has become your pattern, Abraham’s family has become your spiritual family, and Abraham’s promised blessing has become your inheritance through Jesus Christ.
"And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise."
Galatians 3:29 NKJV
